Within the SwissQuantum project, a quantum key distribution (QKD) network connecting the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), University of Geneva (UNIGE) and the Engineering School of Geneva (HEPIA) has been deployed.

Each of the three nodes at CERN, UNIGE & HEPIA are connected with a pair of dark fibers provided by the Center of Information Technology of the State of Geneva (CTI).

Any two stations are linked together by two communication channels: the Quantum channel and the Classical channel. The quantum channel is a single mode dark fiber used exclusively for exchange of cryptographic keys. The classical channel, on the other hand is used for all classical communications including full-duplex encryption, key management and devices management. Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is used to multiplex the different services on the second fiber of the pair. The figure below illustrates the SwissQuantum network topology:
